APA has 25 members. Only professionals with a degree in psychology can become members of the Azerbaijan Psychologists Association. However many services and training programs are open for teachers, community workers, parents and others.

Since Azerbaijan has about one million refugees and displaced people, and survives a transition from totalitarian regime, currently the focus is on various methods of psychotherapy, counseling, work with communities, and helping people to cope with traumas. Research projects mostly are focused on comparison of various pilot projects and new approaches in education and community development, in order to adjust these approaches to local realities.

Founded in 1997, registered in 1999, APA was the first NGO of psychologists in the country. APA has been running various research and training programs and bringing various methods of psychotherapy and social work to Azerbaijan. In July of 2002 APA co-sponsored the first international conference entitled "Surviving Trauma With Dignity". More than 90 professionals from 12 countries attended and shared expertise in working with refugees, orphans and other vulnerable social groups, surviving from oppression and trauma. Currently APA forms a coalition of NGOs working in psychosocial field and intends to develop a long-term educational program for so-called social workers (workers in humanitarian organizations, refugee camps and other settings).
