Abstract: Psychology is relatively new to Nigeria. Its origins can be traced to the offering of courses in counseling and educational psychology in departments of education at the few universities in the country at that time. As an academic discipline, psychology is said to have started in 1964 when the first department of psychology was established at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with 16 students and two lecturers (Olomolaiye, 1985). Psychology's identity in Nigeria has been that of a social-science discipline (Obot & Gire, 1995).
