England's King Henry VIII presented a deed of covenant granting Bethlehem Hospital ("Bedlam") to the city of London. The transfer was completed on January 13, 1547, when Henry VIII signed the letter patent which officially ratified the deed. The hospital was founded as a priory in 1247, taken under the care of the city of London in 1346, and seized by Edward III in 1375.
