1773 - The first US public mental hospital |

The first U.S. public mental hospital, the Publick Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds, opened in Williamsburg, Virginia. The first "keeper" was James Galt, and the first patient was Zachariah Mallory. The hospital was closed during the American Revolution, raided by both sides in the Civil War, burned in 1885, moved elsewhere in Williamsburg in the 1960s, and continues today as Eastern State Hospital.
