1848 - Norwegian parliamentary law relating to mental health

The Norwegian parliament passed the Act for the Treatment and Care of the Mentally Ill, Norway's first parliamentary law relating to mental health. The act was the work of Fredrik Holst and Herman Major. It was followed by the establishment of Norway's first psychiatric hospital, the Gaustad Asylum, in 1855.
