1962 - Psychological Institute of the Republic of South Africa (PIRSA) founded |
|
The Psychological Institute of the Republic of South Africa (PIRSA) was founded, after the older South African Psychological Association (SAPA) voted in 1961 to admit "non-whites" to membership. The PIRSA was restricted to whites only, conforming to apartheid policies. By 1983, sentiment for democratic reforms moved the SAPA and PIRSA to merge, forming the Psychological Association of South Africa, which had no racial or ethnic membership barriers.
