The Lithuanian Psychological Association was founded. Its history began in 1958, when the Lithuanian section of the USSR Society of Psychologists was formed, under the leadership of Professor Alfonsas Gučas. In 1988, the Lithuanian section was the first of the psychological sections of the Soviet republics to achieve independence. It was also the first non-state owned organization in Lithuania. Under similar circumstances, the Union of Estonian Psychologists also was formed in 1988.
