Copy Particularly in so called third world countries it is expected that psychology as a social science should also contribute to the solution of social problems, which sometimes are of an existential nature, and help to improve the living conditions. This basic expectation is, however, not easy to meet. The reasons are manifold. It will be argued that the application of psychology or the development of an applied psychology in this field is at least partly a myth. And it will be elaborated that the domain of science, which aims at theory construction, is basically (ontologically) different from the domain of politics, which aims at changing or improving reality. What is called for in psychology is thus the development of contextualized theories, or more precisely, theories that use culture as context. Beyond this, some general dimensions referring to the relation of science and politics, state and in some cultures religion will be mentioned.
