Relationship between family/parent factors with child adjustment in a Sudanese sample Ahmed M. El Hassan Shennan The relationship between family and parental factors and Sudanese children's adjustment was explored in a stratified normative sample of 300 children. Parents and teachers completed Conners' parent-48 and teacher-39 questionnaires. Parents also completed a questionnaire about family structure and parenting behavior as well as socio-demographic information. A number of associations in this sample were of special significance. In particular, behavior problems were not more common in large families: (1) Family size was negatively correlated with symptoms of daydream attention, unsociability and psychosomatic problems, (2) late weaning reduced conduct and impulsive-hyperactive problems (3) and more significantly, of religion on childhood behavior problems. Other findings included the positive effect of grandparents in family processes and the role of gender in childhood behavior problems. Practical implications of these findings are discussed in relation to child mental health in the Sudan |
