This paper examined the concept of volition or will power from the Islamic perspective and compared it with the Western perspective. Musabarah is a strong construct in the Islamic perspective, referring to one's will power and perseverance as a Muslim in carrying out duties or resisting against forbidden impulses. Comparing it to Western Constructs, musabarah is closely related to delay of gratification, persistence, self-control/resourcefulness, distantly related to conscientiousness, and negatively related to impulsivity. The nearest resemblance to musabarah is volition, newly reintroduced to the Western perspective, and still vague in definition. The author introduced an Islamic behavioral religiosity scale and two musabarah scales and relating them to the related concept discussed above. |
