Work values play an integral role in the production process within organizations, since they direct and determine social attitudes and social behaviour. In his dynamic theory of values (1992, 1999), Schwartz establishes a universal structure for the fundamental value system. It consists of ten interdependent and intercorrelated value dimensions organized along two fundamental axes. Nevertheless, because Schwartz's theory has not yet been applied to the domain of work values, it is difficult to use it within the work context. Also, Schwartz's model has never been tested on managerial populations. Would Schwartz's theory apply equally to work values? Do work value systems display a similar structure to that of the Schwartz value model across countries? The objective of this research is to extend Schwartz's theory to cover work values. To achieve that objective, we developed a work values questionnaire and validated it empirically on samples of French and English executives in their respective countries. The structural analyses show that Schwartz's theory is validated in the domain of work values in the two samples. |
