Rejuvenating career service to yield sustainable development: A solution to unemployment phenomenon in Malaysia Shukran Abdul Rahman and Saodah Wok The imbalance between the influx of graduates in the labor markets and work opportunities creates an unhealthy environment for a developing country like Malaysia. The mismatch between the supplies of labor specialization with the demand of the job specification creates a vacuum. Thus, this paper tries to explore the career seeking activity among graduates at a tertiary learning institution. Specifically, it looks at the perceived role of the university in helping graduates in planning and seeking job opportunities in the labor market. A total of 1827 fresh graduates were surveyed for the study, using a self-administered questionnaire. Results show that there is little mismatch between qualification, specialization and skills of graduates with the workplace requirements, but the graduates are able to adapt to workplace demand accordingly. The study has also identified relevant problems to unemployment with corrective strategies to overcome such problems. One of the solutions is to rejuvenate and revitalize the career centre services for the graduates so that they are robust, adaptive and dynamic with competitive advantage and cutting edge. |
