Personality, values and work outcome: A cross-cultural and cross-generational examination of the Big Five Lakshmi Narayan and Shankar Menon The present study extended the research on cross-cultural studies of personality and examined the relationship between personality, values and work outcomes for three generations of Asian-Americans living in the United States. The moderating effects of culture and how it affected the relationship between personality and work outcomes was also studied. The dimensions of Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience from the Big-Five and the cross-cultural values of Individualism and Collectivism (IC) were examined. The work outcomes that were examined were job satisfaction, turnover motivation and job-related tension. There were significant differences in IC scores for the three generations of Asian-Americans. There were also significant differences in some of the personality dimensions for the three generations. Finally, some evidence for the moderating effect of IC and the personality-work outcome relationship was found. The implications of this and the growing importance of cultural dimensions in this diversified global economy are discussed. |
