Ghandhi's basic tenet that the power of truth should be the driving force for all non-violent protests and confrontations seems to have served partly as the inspiration for South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The present study investigates the parallels between Gandhi's psychology of truth and non-violence and the experience of the TRC in bringing about reconciliation between the Black and White communities of South Africa. However, the implications for peace remain unclear; key questions need to be addressed, like:
- Is reconciliation possible without justice?
- Does reconciliation necessarily lead to peace?
- Is South Africa's experience replicable in other parts of the conflict-ridden world?
- Do the victims experience more peace than the victimizers at the end of the day?
