Anxiety and depression among people affected by terrorism in Kashmir Waheeda Khan, Shanoo Sheikh and Meena Osmany Since the early 1990s terrorism and violence has brought in severe emotional distortion and misery to the people of valley of Kashmir, once known for peace and tranquility. Therefore the present study focuses on the impact of terrorism on the psychological wellbeing of the people. For this purpose 100 adult participants comprising of terrorism affected and control groups with equal number of males and females were selected. Data were collected using an Anxiety scale and Beck's Depression Inventory. Results revealed that terrorism affected group exhibited higher levels of anxiety as well as depression, compared to control group. Moreover, anxiety and depression showed positive and significant correlation. Mean differences between male and female both for anxiety and depression were not significant. However, females affected by terrorism showed higher levels of anxiety and depression. To conclude, terrorism creates a psychological state of extreme fear, anxiety and depression among the people, so efforts should be made to enhance the mental health of the people of Kashmir. |
