This symposium is held under the auspices if the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP). The symposium assembles four presentations from researchers based in the Middle East and North Africa. The first presentation titled "Stress management among collective societies: The case of Palestinian-Arabs in Israel" is by Marwan Dwairy, the founder of the first psychological services center among Palestinians in Israel in 1978. The second contribution is by Khiati Abdul Kadir El-Amir and is titled "Guidance and Counseling : A Cross-Cultural Approach". The presentation suggests to root counseling in Islamic countries in the concept of Al-Hisbah. The third presentation comes from Omar Al-Modayfer, Head of Section of Psychiatry of King Fahad National Guard Hospital, and is titled "Mental health and social changes, deliberate self-harm admissions as an index". The paper is reviewing incidents of self-harm and in particular the increase in self-harm rates in Saudi Arabia. The fourth presentation by Samir Farad is titled "Islamic Neurolinguistic Programming" and is advocating a special emic approach to therapy and learning. Professor Lutz Eckensberger from the German Institute for International Educational Research will act as discussant of this symposium. |
