Copy Despite the documented links between psychological factors and health outcomes, many countries in the region have not yet integrated psychological services into their health care delivery systems. The psychologist's role has mostly been restricted to the psychiatric settings, with a paucity of positions available to psychologists in medical settings.

Efforts and resources have mostly focused on improving medical services and medical technology, with minimal or no attention to the psychological dimensions of health, physical illness, and the recovery process.

This presentation draws from a research project in progress that attempts to document the need for utilizing psychological services in the medical setting in Middle-Eastern/developing countries in the region. The role of the psychologist in the medical setting and the advantages of a multidisciplinary approach to health care will be outlined. Implications for medical training in the region will be discussed.
