Launch of Caribbean Alliance of National Psychological Associations

We are honored to announce that the Caribbean Alliance of National Psychological Associations (CANPA) was launched Wednesday, June 5th, 2013. This event was hosted by the Grenadian Psychological Association (GPA), on behalf of the Caribbean Organisation of Psychology Steering Committee (COPSC), on the True Blue Campus of St. George’s University.

The goal of CANPA is to provide a structure that will bring a unifying voice and mission to the activities of psychologists from the region, the Caribbean diaspora and its supporters, to improve the lives of our populations. CANPA has already begun to transcend regional geography, language, colonial history and political arrangements, to create new mental health and psycho-social approaches to the challenges that undermine the wellness of Caribbean people.

Following on the highly successful Caribbean Regional Conference of Psychology, CRCP 2011, held in Nassau, Bahamas, in November 2011, to the Post-Conference activities, the mission remained the same; to create a regional psychological association.  The Nassau conference theme of Psychological Science and Well-Being: Building Bridges for Tomorrow, established COPSC (the Caribbean Organization of Psychology Steering Committee) and regional committees to provide the temporary leadership to develop CANPA.

That initial goal has now been met.

The following presidents of Caribbean psychological organisations or their selected representatives affixed their signature to establish CANPA:

The Bahamas Psychology Association, the Psychological Association of Barbados, the Association of the Psychologists of Martinique, Surinaamse Vereniging van Psychologen en Orthopedagogen, the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Psychologists, the Association of Virgin Island Psychologists, the Grenadian Psychological Association, the Haitian Psychological Association.

The following Associations have also pledged their support:

the Sociedad Cubana de Psicología, the Asociación de Psicología de Puerto Rico.

CANPA invites those interested in the wellness of the larger Caribbean region to its 2014 Caribbean Regional Conference of Psychology, to be held in Paramaribo, Suriname, from November 11-14. 2014. The host is the Surinaamse Vereniging van Psychologen en Orthopedagogen (SVPO). The conference theme is Caribbean Psychology: Unmasking the Past, Claiming our Future.
